The fact that Velociraptor resembled a bird is explained by the fact that it belonged to the Dromaeosauridae, a group of feathered dinosaurs closely related to birds and believed to have descended from a flying ancestor. In fact, according to some scientists, dromaeosaurids were real birds, which had largely lost their ability to fly. An adult velociraptor was too heavy to fly, but perhaps the young could glide from a branch.
